NRW set to install temporary flood defence in Presteigne

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is due to install a temporary flood defence in Presteigne.

Work to install the defence is due to take place before 11 November and is expected to take up to two days.

The defence will provide temporary protection to a part of Presteigne after a flood wall protecting the town failed earlier in the year. The temporary flood defence will be installed in the Lugg just downstream of Lugg Bridge.

The NRW Engineering Team has surveyed the existing wall and designed a temporary defence to provide the same level of protection as was previously provided along the river Lugg.

The defence will comprise of a robust modular flood defence product, combined with an apron. This will provide the height required to protect against high river flows and seepage caused by spaces on uneven surfaces.

Julian Barnes, NRW Land and Assets Operations Manager said:

“We know that some Presteigne residents have been particularly concerned over the condition of the damaged flood wall as autumnal weather starts to affect river levels.

“Our focus is to make sure that we install a temporary solution that will provide the same level of protection as the flood wall would have done before it failed. We are working quickly to ensure the defence is in place before the worst of autumnal and winter weather set in.”

NRW officers are also exploring long term options. Residents may see NRW officers and contractors surveying the site soon after the defence has been installed.
