Residents encouraged to attend Knighton flood risk study drop-in event

A drop-in session to update Knighton residents on the latest developments of a flood risk study being carried out in the town will be held this week (23 June).

The study was instigated by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) after the River Teme and the Wylcwm Brook overflowed and flooded on three occasions since December 2020, most recently after Storm Franklin in February 2022.

To date, the study includes building a hydraulic model for the River Teme and Wylcwm Brook to enable NRW to better understand contributing factors to a series of flood events over recent years.

The study is also looking at potential flood alleviation options to reduce flood risk for the community in the future.

The drop-in session will take place on 23 June between 3:30pm and 6pm at the Knighton Community Centre. Residents can attend at any point during the time to learn more about the study and speak to staff.

Keith Ivens, NRW Operations Manager said: “This study looks to gain a better understanding of vulnerabilities in Knighton, and how we can try to overcome them.

“This drop-in session is important as it will give residents a chance to learn about the study, and also for them to give us feedback to influence the next phase of the work.”

NRW officers will be joined by Powys County Council and Severn Rivers Trust colleagues at the event.
