Halfway Forest, near Llandovery

What's here

Halfway Forest is set in beautiful countryside between the Brecon Beacons and the Cambrian Mountains.

It is easy to find, just off the A40, and is an ideal spot to stretch your legs or have a picnic.

There are two waymarked walking trails and picnic benches around the car park and by the river.

The Forestry Commission created forests like Halfway across the UK after the country’s timber stocks had been run down during the First World War.

Walking trails

The walking trails are waymarked and start from Halfway car park.

Nant y Dresglen Trail

1¼ miles, 2.1 kilometres, easy

The Nant y Dresglen Trail is a circular route which winds through the trees, never going far from the waters of Nant y Dresglen.

Melin y Glyn Trail

2¼ miles, 3.6 kilometres, moderate

Follow an old county road along the western side of the valley, before reaching the forest road bridge, at Melin y Glyn.

A mill used to be here many years ago, now there’s hardly a trace of it.

Return along a track through the trees and the forest road.

Horse riding and carriage driving

There is open access for horse riders and carriage driving throughout Halfway Forest, apart from the military training area on the Epynt and around Sennybridge.

The Halfway car park has tethering posts and space for horseboxes.

There is limited space for carriages in the Halfway car park.

The horse riding trails were created in partnership with the Crychan Forest Association.

For details of the trails go to the Crychan Forest Association website.

There are also horse riding trails in Crychan Forest at Brynffo, Esgair Fwyog and Cefn Farm.
