The role
Are you passionate about protecting the environment and ready to take on a challenging and rewarding role? We’re offering an exciting opportunity to join our Mid Wales Waste and Enforcement Team on a permanent basis.
We’re looking for a confident and motivated individual with strong communication and influencing skills who can make a real impact. If you're naturally inquisitive, enjoy problem-solving, and thrive in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same, this could be the perfect fit.
As a Senior Officer, you’ll play a key role in regulating permitted waste sites across Ceredigion and Powys. Drawing on your regulatory or compliance experience, you’ll carry out site inspections—independently and in teams—to ensure environmental permits are being followed.
You’ll build productive relationships with site operators, offering guidance and taking proportionate enforcement action where necessary to drive compliance and protect our natural resources.
You’ll also respond swiftly and effectively to environmental incidents, including illegal waste activities, as part of NRW’s duty as a Category 1 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act. Covering a large geographical area you will need to hold a valid full UK licence to drive NRW fleet vehicles (cars and vans).
In addition to leading by example in the field, you’ll support the Team Leader in setting work programmes, mentoring colleagues, and stepping in as a deputy when needed.
This is a varied, fast-paced role where your decisions matter. Join us and be part of a team that’s making a real difference to Wales’ environment every day.
To make an informal enquiry about this role, please contract Jeremy Goddard; jeremy.goddard@cyfoethnaturiolcymru.gov.uk.
Interviews will be conducted in-person at a venue to be confirmed in Mid Wales.
As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the NRW office at the above location and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.
Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.

- Routinely lead our response to large or contentious cases/issues.
- Co-ordinate pre-application discussions with Operators and NRW Permitting Teams to aid timely, efficient and good quality permit variations, applications and surrenders.
- Where non-compliance is identified, determine and implement the most appropriate intervention option to ensure operators return to compliance as quickly as possible, with minimum environmental impact and consideration of the economic impacts.
- Be required to participate in technical/ strategic groups or represent NRW on external forums e.g. UK regulators’ sector groups, as required.
- Contribute to NRW Sector Groups and cross-agency sector groups as required to aid adoption of consistent regulatory approaches and the dissemination of good practices to the benefit of the environment.
- Coaching and mentoring of team members.
- Respond to incidents and complaints.
