Permit variation issued for waste transfer facility in Caerphilly

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) has today (Thursday 13 October) issued a variation to an environmental permit for a waste transfer facility at Nine Mile Point Industrial site in Caerphilly.

The application was submitted by Drumcastle Ltd in November last year and will allow the operator to remove the combustion of natural gas that is used for drying waste.

It will also allow an activated carbon filter to be installed, helping to reduce potential odour released from the site.

Drumcastle Limited already held an existing environmental permit allowing them to treat non-hazardous household, commercial and industrial waste to produce solid recovered and refuse derived fuel.

The decision to issue the permit variation follows two public consultations held in April and September this year.

Following a thorough assessment of the information supplied by the applicants and consultation responses received, NRW is satisfied that the company can make the changes without adversely impacting on local people or the environment.

The determination of the application included a range of assessments including noise and odour pollution.

Having looked carefully at the information provided in the application and consultation, we are confident that the variation to the permit meets the legal requirements, and the operator can carry out the activity without significant risk to the environment or human health.
